travel europe italy veneto venice scuola grande di san marco
ARCHITECT: PIETRO LOMBARDO, MAURO CODUSSI (1485)

Located on the Campo San Givanni e Paolo next to Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the Scuola di San Marco was once the home of Scuole Grandi of Venice.
The Scuole Grandi of Venice were a confraternity or sodality institution, a charitable and religious organization who had a major role in the history and development of music.
Originally, it was built in 1260 by the Confraternity of San Marco but was destroyed by fire.
While the polished marble elements are Renaissance classicism, the arches and niches relate to the Byzantine nature of many Venetian styles.
